Acupuncture is the insertion of hair-thin, sterilized, and disposable needles into specific energetic points to influence the flow of qi (or "vital energy", "life force") and blood to correct imbalances, restore health, as well as to enhance immunity. Acupuncture stimulates the release of a variety of hormones (such as endorphine, noradrenaline) that help the body respond to injury, trauma, and stress. Many people may feel a mild sensation -- such as dull, achy, tingling, or pressure -- upon needle insertion or where the meridian (an energy pathway) is affected, but usually do not describe the sensation as painful or sharp pain. In fact, those mild needle sensations are an indication of the therapeutic effectiveness.
