Five Elements Lifestyle ..."Seasons change, and so do I"...
The five elements refer to the five essential elements to life in the natural world, namely fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. The ancient Chinese recognized the specific character in each element resembling to those characters observed in the seasons, in the environment, in the cycle of our lives, and in the stages of health or illness. The keys to optimal health and longevity are balance and harmony in Chinese Medicine.
Later, a very unique Five Elements theory was developed to study and explain the complicated physiological and pathological relationships between the human body (i.e., a micro-cosmic system) and the external environment (i.e., a macro-cosmic system). In other words, Five Elements theory is applied to explain not only the balance of our internal environment - body, mind, emotion, spirit - but also the balance between our internal environment with the external environment in which we live and act upon daily.
The basic character of wood is to grow and flourish; fire, to create heat and flare up; earth, to transform and give birth; metal, to descend and clear up; water, to generate cold and flow downward. One's life will be more productive in quality (i.e., health) and quantity (i.e., longevity) if one can learn and practice daily to harmoniously align his/her internal environment and lifestyle with the external changes based on the Five Elements theory.
